Before you’re ready to learn your side-mount tricks like Man on the Flying Trapeze, you need to learn how to throw the yoyo across your body. What I do when I show people is I get them to hold it in their hand the normal way, and then twist their hand off to the right so that the yoyo is now parallel to their body and then twist their hand back so that they’re holding it between their thumb and and the rest of their hand. When you get better at the trick you don’t need to do this you can still hold it in your hand the same way.
What you’re going to do is lift your elbow up from your body like this and you’re actually going to twist your wrist at the same time as when you drop your elbow, and you’re going to let the yoyo fall over your hand just like that. The better you get at the throw the more power you’re going to be able to put into it. When you throw it you actually want the yoyo to sweep across your body and come right about here and then it will come back to your hand just like this.
The advantage of learning this trick, of course, is that the better your throw gets, the easier it is going to be to get your mount down when you start working on the Trapeze.
As an alternative to learning a whole new throw like I’ve just shown you, a lot of yoyoers what they choose to do instead is to just turn their body and just use their conventional throw and just let the yoyo pass across their body like that. It’s not quite as elegant, but it get’s the job done. Either way, you’re going to be ready to learn the Trapeze.
