This trick is called the Elevator and it looks like this.
Now the Elevator is a pretty simple trick, all you need to do throw the yo-yo, get it on the string and then pull your hands apart. That will give the illusion that the yo-yo is climbing the string. Since it has that illusion it is a pretty cool trick to an outside audience because they are watching it and they are not quite sure how it is happening. You know that all you are doing is spreading your hands apart.

To make sure that the illusion works properly for you, you want to make sure that your bottom hand is in front of your top hand just a little bit so that as you are pulling it up it doesn’t bounce off the string like that. If it bounces off the string it really ruins the effect.

Again, just make sure that your bottom hand is just slightly above your other hand. Just pull your hands apart. When you get to the top just throw the yo-yo up a little bit, pull your finger out. Your yo-yo will come right back to you. And that is the elevator.

This trick is called Around the Corner and it looks like this.

Around the Corner is a pretty simple trick. All you’re going to do is throw a sleeper; you’re going to lift it up with the back of your arm; then you are going to give it a little bit of a tug, and that will cause it to come back; you’re just going to throw it over your shoulder. Try to make it go straight down and back to your hand.

That’s really the whole trick. If you have an auto-return yoyo, you can let the auto-return function do all the work for you. When it comes back up automatically you can just throw it over your shoulder like that. Or, if you have a conventional yoyo, or you can even do this with an Originator, you can just give it a little tug, throw it over, pull it up.

And that’s Around the Corner yoyo trick.

If you’ve been using your yoyo for a little while what you are going to find is that the string is going to start wearing out and it might even break. This doesn’t mean that your yoyo is broken because yoyos are designed to have their strings replaced. So, in this video I am going to teach you how to do that.

The first thing you want to do if you didn’t already break the string off you want to get this old string off the yoyo.

What I do is I just pinch the string just a couple inches above the yoyo and I twist it off to the left. What that will do is it will cause these strings above the yoyo to split apart, just like that. That will allow me to slip the yoyo right off the string. Now, once you’ve gotten that string off you can throw it away. Then you want to get a new string. I’m just going to use the same one to show you how to do this.

What you want to do with the new string is you want to take the bottom of the string, and that is just the part where it loops around – as opposed to the part that has been tied for you – take the bottom of your string and you want to twist it apart so that it splits apart and you want to put your thumb and one of those fingers in that opening to split the string apart, just like that. Then, you want to take your yoyo and you want to put that string right on the yoyo just like this. If you have an auto-return yoyo, like the Originator, what you want to do is take the string and wrap it around at least one more time, maybe even two more times because that will allow the auto-return mechanism to work.

Once you’ve done that you can just let the yoyo hang down; you can spin it a little bit and that will even out the string at the bottom. Then you are ready to learn how to adjust the string and wind the string which you’ll learn in the next couple of videos.

Now if you don’t have an auto-return yoyo, if you have a Dominator or a Luminator, then what you want to do is just take your string and just put it on one time, and that’s all you need. Once you have done that, again, give it a little twist, and now you are ready to go.

This trick is called the creeper and it is a whole lot like Walk the Dog except, instead of just walking forward with the yoyo, you’re going to swing the yoyo forward on the ground, kneel down, and bring the yoyo back to your hand while it’s still on the ground. Like I said, it’s not too difficult. So, all you do is you throw your sleeper, swing the yoyo forward while it’s on the ground, bring it right back to your hand. And that’s the creeper.

This trick is called Walk the Dog and it’s actually one of the easiest, but also one of the famous yoyo tricks you can learn. All the trick really is, is your gonna throw a good sleeper and then touch the yoyo to the ground; when the yoyo touches the ground the spin is going to cause the yoyo to walk forward and that’s really all there is to this trick.
I’m going to show you two tips that are going to make learning this trick a whole lot easier. So, the first one is, when you get your sleeper, your actually going to want to swing the yoyo behind you so that you can swing it forward again, and that’s going to give it some forward momentum to keep the yoyo moving.
The second thing is that as the yoyo is walking you want to make sure never to move your yoyo hand too close to the yoyo because that is going to put slack in the string and that’s going to make the yoyo come right back.
As long as you keep these two tips in mind, this trick is going to be a breeze.

One of the most important skills for a yoyoer to develop is a good throw. Now we may really feel like we’ve accomplished something if we can do this, but, if we’re trying to learn tricks, that’s not gonna help us at all. So, if we want to learn to have a good throw actually the first thing we need to do is make sure that we’re holding the yoyo properly. So, if your palm is up, the way the yoyo should be sitting the string should be going over the top of the yoyo if you flip it over you’ll see that the string is going underneath. And, if you throw the yoyo like that, more often than not, especially if you’re a beginner, the yoyo is just going to spin out at the bottom. So, if that’s happening all the time when you’re throwing it, chances are you’re holding the yoyo upside down.
So, just flip it over so the strings going over the top then when you throw it it’s just going to roll off your hand really nicely. So, our basic throw is just to make a muscle, we’re gonna extend our hand when the yoyo gets to the bottom we’re gonna turn it over and pull it up to catch it. It’s really important at this point that you’ve already adjusted the string for your height otherwise when you throw the yoyo down to make sure it’s not going to hit the ground you’re gonna raise your hand up higher and higher and your gonna have to learn all your tricks like this… I’ve seen it done before but it’s not the best way.
So, if our string is adjusted we’re ready to learn our throw. Just throw it out, turn your hand over to catch it. Once you get used to this, the you’re also going to want to make the yoyo sleep. Sleeping is where the yoyo spins down there at the bottom of the string. One of the problems with getting the yoyo to sleep is that the harder you throw it the more difficult it is to make it sleep. That’s because when the yoyo hits the bottom of the string it has a tendency to bounce and if it bounces it gets slack in the string, if it gets slack it’s gonna wanna come back. So what you need to do is compensate for that bounce with your yoyo hand. If you watch when I throw it you’ll see that I do just a little up and down motion – I’m cushioning the yoyo when I throw it. And that cushioning effect, it takes a little while to learn, but, once you perfect it, it will work no matter how soft, or how hard you throw the yoyo.
Once you’ve got the sleeper it just opens up a whole world of tricks for you to learn.

The first thing that your going to want to do when you get your yoyo out of its package, even before you put it on your finger, is adjust the string for your height. All that you need to do this is, of course, your yoyo and a pair of scissors.
So, take your yoyo, and you want to drop it so that it’s just barely not touching the ground. You want to find where the string meets with your belly button, and just kinda hold it right there. Now grab your scissors, and you want to cut the string right where you made that mark. Next, take the top of the string and you want to fold it over, and your gonna take these two strings and treat them as one… just wrap it over your finger, that will create a little loop, and you’re gonna take the top of the string and just feed it right through that loop. And what this will do is create the same type of loop that your yoyo had when you bought it.
Now this loop may be too large or too small for your finger, and so, what we’re gonna do, is take this bottom string and feed it right through that loop. What you’ll find when we do this, is it will make another loop that’s adjustable, so that no matter how large or how small your finger is, it will fit. So, where you want to put it is on the middle finger of your dominate hand and I usually place it between my first and my second knuckle, tighten it down.
Now we’re ready to learn to wind the yoyo.

Once you’ve got the yoyo string properly adjusted for your height it would be nice to find a fast way to wind the yoyo up. Now, I know we all know the old standby to just wind the yoyo like this, but if you’re trying to learn tricks that can be really frustrating and tedious because it takes forever. So I’m gonna show you… how to wind the yoyo like that.
Now, to learn this trick it would actually be easier if we first learn the three basic principles that help a yoyo come back. The first principle is that the yoyo has to be spinning. I know that one is kind of obvious but if the yoyo isn’t spinning it’s not gonna come back. The second one is that there has to be some slack in the string. Until you give this slack to the yoyo, it’s not gonna come back. And that’s why, actually, when you pull the yoyo up, or, if you were to drop your hand quickly, the yoyo comes up… because you’re giving the string slack.
Now the third principle is that the string has to be straight in-line with the yoyo. So I’m gonna use a trick I’m gonna show you in the future called sleeping beauty (aka UFO) to illustrate this point. Right now there’s some slack in the string, but until we line it up and make it straight, it doesn’t come back.
So those are your three principles: you’ve got spin, slack and straight. So we’re gonna use this trick to do all three to the yoyo at the same time, and that’s what’s gonna make it come back.
So, what you wanna do is hold the yoyo in your opposite hand between your thumb and your middle finger. And then take your yoyo hand and put it straight above your head. Now, I’ve taught this trick to some people and they get nervous that the yoyo is going to hit them in the face to they move their hand off to the side; that doesn’t work because the yoyo doesn’t come up straight. So, with your yoyo hand over your head your gonna pull up and with your opposite hand your gonna push down at the same time, and ideally the yoyo will pop up and sit right about here in front of you. If you pull up too hard then the yoyo is going to go straight up into the air, and if you don’t pull up hard enough then the yoyo is just going to stay there and it’s not going to get the slack it needs; so you need a good balance between your two hands. When you get it just right the yoyo just goes up into the air, you can put your hand under it, it will wind all the way up.
It takes a little practice to get it just perfect but if you can really nail this trick early on in your yoyo career it’s going to make learning to yoyo a whole lot more fun and you’re gonna see much faster progress.
